Béchamel Sauce

Simple Mother Sauce


Béchamel is a classic French mother sauce that is used globally in dishes and to create sauces. This is an important sauce to have in your arsenal!


Your List of Ingredients

  • 16oz of whole milk

  • 1tbsp flour

  • 1tbsp of butter

  • Pinch of nutmeg

  • Salt to taste

Step 1: Instructions


Melt butter to a 3qt sauce pan over medium heat and add the flour whisking to avoid lump until you have a slightly golden paste. Add your milk constantly whisking and bring up to a simmer while continuing to stir until it is thick and creamy. Season with salt and nutmeg.



Note

If you feel that your sauce isn't thickening up, you can make a slurry with the sauce and a 1tsp of additional flour and add. Ensure you lower the heat to low heat to ensure the added flour has time to cook off. Once you have given it some time to cook off if it's not thick you can bring the temp up to medium and it should thicken up.
